Lesbian and Gay Liaison Officer launched in West Surrey

A pilot project involving the appointment of a Lesbian and Gay Liaison Officer (LAGLO) has been launched this week in West Surrey.

The LAGLO’s main role will be to work with the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and offer a point of contact if they have any specific concerns or issues. The LAGLO will also develop links with local borough based LGBT groups and venues, as well as acting as an advisor in the case of any hate crimes committed in Waverley and Guildford. The officer will liaise with victims and witnesses as well as dealing with referrals to appropriate agencies. The LAGLO will also provide a point of contact between the police and partner agencies.

Mick Day from Surrey Police’s Diversity Directorate explained: “The officer will be developing initiatives to encourage the reporting of LGBT crime and incidents to facilitate effective two-way communication between LGBT people and Surrey Police. We have always treated any form of hate crime as a serious offence and we are keen to increase the reporting of hate crime incidents and take action wherever possible. The launch of this new role also demonstrates our commitment to working with the LGBT community.”

Gino Meriano, Chair of Gay Surrey says “A lot of planning has gone into the appointment and to finally see this fantastic step forward within Surrey Police shows true commitment in their ongoing work with the LGB and T community. We look forward to seeing more LAGLO officers around the whole of Surrey, We must show the police support for taking this next step and continue to grow confidence in their work and in reporting hate crime”.

Mick Day added: “Although we currently only have a LAGLO for West Surrey, we will be looking to recruit LAGLOs on the other divisions in the near future.”

To get in touch with the West Surrey LAGLO, email the dedicated mailbox at !WSLAGLO@surrey.pnn.police.uk or call the dedicated telephone number on 01483 630474.
