High Court rejects Surrey County Council's one star legal challenge

The High Court has turned down Surrey County Council’s application for Judicial Review of Ofsted’s decision to award its children’s services just one star for its level of service.

The grading came after a damning report criticising the council for its lack of care for vulnerable children.

Surrey has decided not to take further action and has issued a press release claiming that many of the children’s services have been judged as outstanding or good.

It makes no mention of the services that caused Ofsted to criticise the council.

In a statement the council said: “Surrey County Council has been told of the High Court judge's decision to refuse permission for a judicial review of Ofsted's conclusions about the authority's children's service. In the light of this judgement, it was decided not to pursue this matter further.”

Bill Slaughter, chairman of the Stoneleigh and Auriol Residents Association, who was vocal in his criticism of the legal action, describing it as “gambling with council tax payers’ money”, has welcomed the result.

“This is good news. It prevents any further waste of tax payers’ money.

"It is disgraceful that they tried to pursue this in the first place purely for political reasons,” he said.

In the council’s press release SCC says that nearly 80 per cent of its schools have been rated as outstanding or good and nearly 70 per cent of pupils achieved five or more A* to C grades at CSE putting Surrey in the top 20 authorities nationally.
