Naturally, we are all delighted that Hampshire have been given such a wonderful accolade by being voted so well by the Stonewall poll. For some years, we have had a very clear policy:

“Hampshire Constabulary is committed to reducing the fear of crime and making public places safer and incidents of a homophobic or transphobic nature are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We aim to record, investigate and detect all homophobic and transphobic incidents, so if you have been a target of hate crime, because you are, or have been perceived to be, lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender we’d like you to report it.”

This policy has been developed with people from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered communities. What this means to gay and lesbian people in Hampshire, is that the Police have developed strategies for building trust and confidence with them, and that if anyone is subjected to a crime with a homophobic current, Hampshire Police will fully support them.

Fortunately homophobic crime is not a common phenomena in Hampshire, but we just will not tolerate it when it does happen. Higher than 85% of all homophobic hate crimes in Hampshire that have been taken to court have led to a conviction, which is a better achievement than our neighbours in Surrey (just 50%) and Thames Valley (77%). When you look at how many homophobic hate crime prosecutions we have had, in Hampshire we have had almost 13 times as many as Surrey. That is not to say that we have more homophobic hate crime in Hampshire, but is an indication that we take this type of hate crime extremely seriously, and shows that our policy is successfully implemented.

All our Police Officers are trained to ensure that we are welcoming of people from all backgrounds, and so we should be able to give a high quality support to anyone who has been subjected to a crime with a homophobic tone to it. In addition to this training, Hampshire Constabulary was one of the first in the country to develop specially trained Officers with an emphasis on an indepth knowledge of gay and lesbian cultures. We now have these highly trained Officers working from almost every Police Station throughout the county, and are available to give advice and support to Officers dealing with victims of crime.
