Twister Redhill opened its doors for the first time on Wednesday 10 th October 2007 at 7pm. The young people were presented with glo-stick bangles and flower garlands, plus plenty of food and refreshments.
Jamie Bunch from the Surrey Youth Parliament made the opening speech and thanked everyone for the work they had done to make Twister Redhill a reality. Jamie also talked about the importance of local LGBTQ Youth Services, including LGBTQ Youth Clubs:
‘Statistics suggest that 1 in 9 young people question their sexuality and those young people should be able to access a local service that understands their situation and is able to assist them according to their individual needs'.
Once the official welcomes were over, the young people tucked into a huge, butter-cream iced carrot cake. This was quickly followed by the traditional game of Twister, hampered by strategically placed stems of helium balloons. There was a real party atmosphere as the music came on and the socialising got going.
Twister Redhill looks set to become a popular and sustainable facility, thanks to the young people that applied for the Youth Opportunity Funds that has enabled the club to open. If you would like more information about Twister Redhill contact Sam King |
